Classified by Construction


Packaged Type


These types of cooling towers are smaller as compared to the field-erected towers, and they are completely assembled in a factory. As they are smaller towers, they are available in tonnages up to 1500 per cell. These towers are pretty useful at places where there is a smaller requirement of chilled water. Some of the places where the packaged type cooling towers are utilized are hotels, manufacturing plant, hospitals, malls, and chemical plants.


Field Erected


These cooling towers are pretty bigger than the packaged type towers. Due to their huge size, they have a pretty high cooling capacity. It is not possible to ship a complete tower to any place, and this is the reason why they are shipped to the site in parts and assembled over there. Once they have been completely assembled, it is not possible to transport them to any other place. These cooling towers are usually visible at petroleum sites and power plants.


Classified based on Flow of Air and Water


Natural Draft Cooling Towers


These towers are very tall and made of concrete. They are shaped like a chimney, and they are widely used in nuclear power plants. Usually, the warm air would rise because of the cool and dry air in the outside atmosphere. The warm air first reaches the top of this cooling tower, and it is then released out into the atmosphere.


Mechanical Draft Cooling Towers


The air from the sides or bottom is pulled out because of the fan that is present at the top of these types of cooling towers. The dry cool air present in the atmosphere is pulled inside through the fill. As the cool air from the fill reached in the middle of this tower, the warm and moist air that is already present would be blown out of the tower through the fan at the top.


Open Loop Cooling Towers


In this type of tower, the water that is utilized in the process would flow through the tower after being exposed to the outside elements of the atmosphere. It acts as a part of the evaporative cooling process.


Closed-Loop Cooling Towers


In this type of tower, a tube bundle is present at the top of it. The working fluid would flow through the tube bundle. The fan present pulls the air for cooling the water that is sprayed on the tube bundle. The main advantage of this cooling tower as compared to the open-loop cooling tower is that the working fluid is not exposed to the outside elements of the atmosphere, and this prevents it from being contaminated.


Round Cooling Towers


A round cooling tower or popularly also known as a bottle-shaped cooling tower is designed for cooling the re-cycled water in the industries from 50 degrees temperature to 4 degrees. The hot water is circulated vertically in the mechanical rotary sprinkler through the inlet present at the bottom of the tower. The latent heat is taken away from the hot water with the help of an induced draft mechanism. The warm air present in the tower is ejected in the atmosphere through the fan present at the top. The output is cold water that is collected and provided back to the source.
